Shopping rules at Thailand's H&M preview

Source: Bangkok PostThe rain and the heavy Friday night traffic couldn't keep them away. Superstars and socialites glittered at the red carpet event that marked the preview of H&M's first store in Thailand at Siam Paragon.Getting into the venue itself was not an easy task, even if you had your little paper handbag that served as an invitation. To access the first floor entrance to the store, you had to wait at the bottom of the M-floor escalator, where a black-tie attendant with slicked back hair and a stern face controlled the flow of guests. Photographers stood behind a cordoned-off area to catch the influx of celebrities as they made their red carpet appearances before disappearing into the vast 3,200 square metre store packed to the brim with items from the H&M Autumn/Winter 2012 collection.DJ Buddha and DJ Plerny kept the atmosphere throbbing with non-stop R&B and hip hop music from their DJ booth near the entrance of the store.Waiters circled, precariously balancing the bubbly and the canapes, but were largely ignored as guests did what they came to do -- shop. The special 20% discount on the preview day was also very persuasive if anyone needed any incentive to go shopping at H&M.Those few who were there to party rather than shop eventually made their way to the less crowded men's and children's sections on the second floor, allowing the dedicated shoppers to get on with business.By the time they had filled their shopping bags and were ready to check out, the line at the cashier was snaking up and down like Suvarnabhumi's immigration counter on a bad day.Under the circumstances, the 10pm closing time was extended to midnight, and even then most guests could have shopped all night and still begged for more, like Eliza Dolittle! The store's owners have already planned a second store at The Mall Bangkapi, scheduled to open this month.
