It is a court case which has gripped the Malaysian media over the past week.

A popular Malaysian DJ has had to reveal his sexual orientation in a murder trial. The victim? His mother. The suspect? His former lover.

Mr Royce Tan (above), 31, a DJ with MyFM, and hairstylist Kenny Lim Kang Wee, also 31, had a tempestuous relationship, reports The New Paper.

They first met around Chinese New Year in 2011 and started dating a month later. Lim also moved into Mr Tan’s Kuala Lumpur family home around that time.

However, over the next several months, their relationship deteriorated. There was also tension between Lim and Madam Lai Kam Lian, Mr Tan’s 63-year-old mother.

The couple ended their relationship sometime in November 2011, and on Dec 1, 2011, Madam Lai was stabbed to death. The crime was captured on CCTV.

Mr Tan said in court that Lim was likely to have murdered his mother.

This inference was based on the suspect’s movement, height, hairstyle and shoes, which were similar to Lim’s.

But the defence argued that Mr Tan had incorrectly identified the attacker due to the poor quality of the CCTV footage.
