Accident and Motorway director Cheang Pou-soi has been developing a big screen, special FX-infused adaptation of the famous Monkey King tale for over three years now.Production began way back in October of 2010 but we haven’t heard much since then, besides the fact that the film’s high budget means it will have to make at least $88 million at the Chinese box office to break even. However, CityOnFire reports that Donnie Yen will headline the movie by portraying the Monkey King, and will line up alongside Chow Yun Fat, Aaron Kwok, and Cecilia Cheung in what is a star-studded cast. The Monkey King was shot in IMAX 3D and employed visual effects talent from Hollywood personel who had worked on films like I Am Legend and Spider-Man 3.The film will be released later this year, on July 4, 2013.That’s hell of a lot of post-production time ‘“ we’ll have to wait and see if the movie will be worth the years of development and if audiences can buy Donnie Yen as the iconic Monkey King. Meanwhile, Stephen Chow’s competing Monkey King project ‘“ titled Journey to the West ‘“ should be in theaters by Spring 2013.
