Obama tests survival mettle on TV -- but draws the line at this

Barack Obama tested his survival instincts by tasting a salmon that had been chewed on by a bear.

However, he passed on drinking his own pee.

He said: "I suppose, in extremis, it's something that I would do - if the alternative was death."

Obama was a celebrity guest in an episode of Running Wild With Bear Grylls, a reality show where famous personalities test their survival skills in the wild.

His episode was taped in September in Alaska but aired on Thursday night.

According to AFP via The Straits Times, the US president used his appearance as an opportunity to press his case for protecting the environment and to speak outside the Oval Office.

Obama engaged in witty banter throughout the episode on what he called "one of the best days of my presidency".

"For security reasons, I am not allowed to have a smartphone," Obama said before taking a selfie with the phone of one of his staffers.

As they ventured into an area popular with bears, host Grylls warned the President that the animals are most dangerous when interrupted while mating.

"I think that's probably true for humans as well," Obama deadpanned.
