MMA fighter dies two days after technical knockout defeat during match

Portuguese mixed-martial arts Fighter João Carvalho died two days after a technical knockout defeat at the hands of Charlie Ward in Dublin during a Total Extreme Fighting match.

Carvalho fell ill 20 minutes after the fight and was rushed to hospital where he received emergency brain surgery.

The 28-year-old, however, died in hospital, reports UniLad.

His team confirmed his tragic death via their Facebook page.

Ward is a teammate of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Conor McGregor.

Footage, reportedly captured at the event on Saturday night, shows the fight ending with Carvalho taking repeated blows to the head.  

Carvalho’s passing serves as a tragic reminder that fighter safety is of utmost importance.
