Controversial Malaysian blogger Papagomo was fined RM4,300 ($1,450) after pleading guilty to three charges of assaulting a foreign worker.

According to The Star, the blogger, who's real name is Wan Mohd Wan Deris, 33 was charged for slapping, punching and kicking a Pakistani worker in front of a mall in Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur on Jan 29.

The offence carries a maximum of one year's jail or a fine or both upon conviction.

Papagomo's lawyer pleaded for leniency and said that his client did not have any previous record nor did he commit the offence blindly as mentioned in the statement of facts.

His lawyer Azizzul Shariman Mat Yusoff said: "There were three women, where two of them were his sisters. His sisters told him that the victim had sexually harassed them. So the accused's actions were not committed blindly."

He added that Papagomo is the sole breadwinner in his family and was also providing for his elderly parents who are diabetic.

He is also supporting his sister in college despite earning only RM3,000 a month being self-employed.

The judge ordered Papagomo to pay RM1,000 in default two months jail for the first charge, RM1,500 in default three months jail for the second charge and RM1,800 in default five months jail for his third charge.

Papagomo told reporters after paying the fine: "Maybe I should not have assaulted the worker but I definitely do not regret standing up for my sisters."
