According to an interview with Ming Pao Daily, the actress divulged that it was her unwillingness to get married that led to the demise of the relationship.
At a media event recently, Chow told reporters that before the breakup, she had turned down numerous proposals from her boyfriend, who is seven years her junior.
She also revealed that he was uncomfortable with her filming intimate scenes with male co-stars, and wished she would quit being an actress.
But she was unwilling to let her career take a backseat.
Said Chow: "I don't want to be a housewife. We had discussed this many times before, and the conclusion was I didn't want to get married."
According to reports, they agreed to split amicably last year.
The relationship also cooled because of her busy schedule, as the actress has had her hands full with work and setting up her production house.
Without going into detail, Chow added that she had made a last-ditch effort to save the relationship, but without success.
