How science in Star Wars is actually real

For a story that is set deep in the world of science fiction and fantasy, a great deal of the technology in the Star Wars saga actually has parallels today in the real world.

Ironically, this is partly due to how long the series has been around.

Concepts and ideas that were once just a figment of the imagination when the first Star Wars movie came out in 1977 have had almost thirty years of science and research to become real.

The Wall Street Journal takes a look at a few of the scenes in the movies that you can tell your friends and fellow moviegoers are actually the real deal.

Lasers and Energy Weapons:

Thirty years ago, weapons like blasters and laser cannons were pure fiction but today, the US Navy has launched lasers aboard warships like the USS Ponce in the Persian Gulf to defend against drones and small boats.
