When Kanita Pasang was crowned the winner in a national beauty pageant in Thailand, she shocked everyone by revealing that she used to be a garbage collector.

However, it was later revealed that she had faked her educational background in her application, sparking rumours that she would lose her crown and prize money.

The 17-year-old had previously tearfully apologised for the error, and did so again at a recent press conference, reports The Nation.

The pageant's panel, however, decided not to rescind her prizes as the contest aimed to provide chances for people from all walks of life, regardless of gender or education.

The beauty queen has since said the money will be used on her brother's education, and that she will continue helping her mother collect garbage.

She has been helping her mother collect garbage to support themselves. She even had to drop out of high school as her mother could not afford her school fees.

Their struggle to make ends meet spurred her to join the Miss Uncensored News Thailand beauty pageant so that she could go back to school and support her family.

When she returned home, she immediately showed gratitude to her mother by kneeling at her feet - still wearing her sash and crown.

Despite reportedly receiving a job offer as an actress, the beauty queen said: "I will still help my mother to collect garbage when I'm free even though she is unwilling to let me do it."

Thailand netizens have praised Ms Kanistha for her filial ways and for being both beautiful and good-hearted.
