A single mother killed herself after struggling to come to terms with an abortion she had just weeks earlier, an inquest has heard.
Jade Rees, 21, took her own life after terminating a pregnancy after a five-month relationship with the baby’s father had broken down.
An inquest at Rochdale Coroner’s Court heard how the decision had haunted Jade, leaving her ‘upset and distressed’
On the night of November 3 last year, she had played Ed Sheeran’s ‘Small Bump’ before taking her own life. She had left a handwritten note to her parents and two-year-old son explaining the struggles she faced since the procedure.
Jade, who is from Oldham, had a history of eating disorders and had battled depression since she was 14, reported Asian Town.
She fell pregnant with her son in 2013 but had split from the boy’s father at just four months pregnant. Despite this, she had coped ‘exceptionally well’ as a single doting mother.
She met her latest boyfriend in early 2015 but the relationship had broken down and she took the decision to have an abortion in October. It is not known how far gone she was at the time of the procedure.
The Heywood hearing was told she took an overdose twice in 48 hours, after learning her ex had tried to bar her from a pub they both drank at. On the second occasion, her father rushed her to hospital, where she stayed for two days before being discharged.
However, she hung herself days after and her body was discovered by her mother.
Recording a verdict of suicide, assistant coroner Matthew Cox said: ‘Due to the circumstances and the contents of her note, I am satisfied that Jade did intend the consequence of her actions.
‘I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to Mr Rees and to the rest of Jade’s family at this very difficult and distressing time.’
