The mother of Penang singing star Jeryl Lee Pei Ling has claimed that she lost about RM1,800 (S$596) while on board a flight from Beijing to Kuala Lumpur.

Ivy Liew, 65, claimed that 1,800 yuan and RM700 went missing from her handbag kept under her seat during the midnight flight yesterday.

Her handbag, however, was not stolen, reports The Star.

Lee's purse containing 200 yuan kept in the handbag was also left untouched.

Liew, who kept her handbag under the seat as instructed by the cabin crew, said the incident could have happened while she was asleep.

She and her husband Lee Luan Sung had just accompanied Lee, 16, at the Sing! China finale, where the Chung Ling Private School student was among six finalists of the reality TV talent show that took place at the Bird's Nest stadium in Beijing on Friday.

Liew said she only realised her money was missing at about 6am yesterday.

"I opened my handbag to check on my expenses in Beijing and was shocked to find only RM30 in my purse.

"Jeryl's purse was also kept in my handbag but her money was not stolen," she said after touching down at Penang International Airport yesterday.

Liew said she had informed the cabin crew of the matter but did not intend to lodge a police report.
