Japanese teen girl band Keyakizaka46 sparked controversy online after wearing military-style costumes for a Halloween concert which have been compared to Nazi uniforms.

They wore black one-piece dresses and capes complete with peaked caps bearing a golden bird symbol that resembles the Nazi eagle above a swastika.

According to AFP and the Washington Post via The Straits Times, the incident caused a Twitter backlash.

Many netizens slammed their choice of costume as "unforgivable" and "unacceptable".

Berlin-based Japanese writer Ichika Rokuso posted: "Seventy-one years have passed since the war ended but there are many people who lost loved ones. Please remember that."
