Inmates at a prison in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, have a very unusual annual activity -- for a jail at least.

The Talavera Bruce jail, inside the Bangu penitentiary centre holds an annual contest where the female inmates compete to be Miss Criminal.

Over the past 14 years in the jail, the number of imprisoned females in Brazil has risen over 500 percent, bringing the numbers to about 600,000 inmates.

The contest is supposed to give them an escape from their daily lives and make them feel special for a day in order to boost their self esteem.
