The New Paper

Life seemed to be going well for Ms Desiree Lee.
She holds the title of Miss Singapore Chinatown 2007 and was a finalist in the FHM Girl Next Door in 2007 and 2008.
But in 2012, she was diagnosed with precancerous conditions of the cervix. She had to undergo a cone biopsy which removed a cylindrical or cone-shaped piece of her cervix where the abnormal cells were located.
Things appeared to look up again when she met "the right one" in early 2014. Just after eight months of dating, they decided to get married.
The couple scheduled their wedding for an auspicious date in November 2014 but in August that year, Ms Lee got pregnant.
After the wedding ceremony, they moved in with her parents while they waited for the renovations on their new flat to be completed.
But according to Ms Lee, 36, things started to take a turn for the worse.
They split up after an unhappy marriage when their son was four months old.
She is separated from her estranged husband and takes care of her nine-month-old boy with the help of her parents.
Her mother, who prefers not be named, told TNP in a separate interview over the phone: "I felt sad for her and her baby.
"I told her that her dad and I will give her all the support she needs."
Ms Lee, who is self-employed, said she decided to take part in Mrs Singapore so she could have a platform to help those who have it worse.
"In my own situation, I am overwhelmed emotionally," she said.
"I know there are other women out there who have spouses mistreating them, which is why I want to be there as a support system.
"I think it's important for everyone to share their experiences so we can learn from each other and be stronger through our hardships."
