Malaysian actress Yeo Yann Yann wins another award for her role in the critically acclaimed Singaporean movie, Ilo Ilo, reports The Star.
Yeo is currently based in Singapore. Her role as a pregnant mum struggling during a recession in Singapore had previously won her the Best Supporting Actress award at last year’s 50th Golden Horse Awards, the Chinese equivalent of the Oscars. And she followed that up with a win at the 8th AFA, held in Macau’s City of Dreams for the first time.
The big winner of the night was eclectic Hong Kong director Wong Kar-Wai’s martial arts biopic The Grandmaster, which swept seven awards including Best Picture and Best Director. Zhang Ziyi won Best Actress for her role in the movie. While receiving his best director award, Wong paid tribute to one of the film’s martial arts directors and stuntmen, Ju Kun, who was one of the passengers on the ill-fated MH370 flight.
Indian director Ritesh Batra’s The Lunchbox won two awards – Best Screenplay, and Best Actor for Irfan Khan. The Asian Film Awards were conceived in 2007 to acknowledge films from all over Asia, including India, China, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
