Taiwanese pop star David Tao admitted to an affair with Chinese artist manager Yang Ziqing, major Chinese dailies reported.
In a press conference, Tao, 45, apologised to his wife Penny Chiang, his parents-in-law, his mother, friends and his supporters.
"I had an extramarital relationship and I feel ashamed. I was wrong. Thank you, Penny, for forgiving me. Dad and mum-in-law, I have embarrassed you. Mum, I have let you down. Thank you for not leaving me," he was reported as saying.
Tao said he got acquainted with Yang in 2010 and they went dating.
After his marriage in August last year to Chiang, he and Yang only texted occasionally.
"Both of us only met once after my marriage. I met Yang in Chengdu, China, on June 19 following her invitation," he said.
"The meeting was the main cause of my infidelity, and I will not run away from the problem. I did something wrong.
"Although it is something private, I have a responsibility to explain and face it publicly."
Tao said he had never discussed divorce with Chiang.
"I have promised to spend more time with her. Penny will be my only love from now on," he said.
Yang, later on her Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter, wrote: "If you didn't want to bother me, why did you reply to my messages? Why did you tell me that you missed me? If you are not willing, then why did you meet me.
"I never pointed a gun at you ... Perhaps I should thank you for your honesty. I hope you can really 'love the one and only throughout your life'. Take care."
