Veteran MediaCorp actor Huang Wenyong died on Saturday evening (April 20) in the hospital, at the age of 60.
He is said to have died from lymphoma cancer.
Born in Malaysia, Mr Huang joined the-then Singapore Broadcasting Corporation (SBC) in the 1980s and was among the first few batches of locally-trained actors to enter the industry.
Huang shot to fame through his portrayal of the earnest Chinese migrant Ah Shui in the seminal drama series The Awakening in 1984.
The 27-episode drama spanned the arrival of migrants to Singapore to its post-independence development, and was the first local Chinese drama to be aired overseas, in China.
He remained a stalwart of the industry for many years afterwards, acting in numerous productions.
Later in his career, he often hosted variety shows.
His wake is reported by Lianhe Wanbao to be held at the Teochew funeral parlour at 10, Ubi Road 4 and the funeral procession will be on Wednesday, next week.
