A woman who harboured rape suspect Justin Lee was yesterday sentenced to six months behind bars.

The Taipei District Court convicted Chen Mei-lan of concealing a fugitive. Her six-month prison sentence is commutable to a fine.According to the verdict, Chen allowed Lee to stay in her home in Changhua County for three weeks, despite a nationwide search for the rape suspect.

Media and public speculation over the case resulted in unwarranted hardship and embarrassment for rape victims, and yet Chen made it difficult for prosecutors to find answers, according to the verdict.

The court also noted that Chen has been compliant with the court from the start.

Like Lee, Chen turned herself in to authorities.

On the evening of Aug. 23, she submitted a confession to the Taichung City Police Bureau.

Lee, 27, turned himself in to prosecutors earlier on Aug. 23.

The Taipei District Prosecutors' Office has indicted him on multiple counts of aggravated forcible rape, forcible rape, intercourse with an unconscious person and invasion of privacy since August 2009.
