Prisoners star Jake Gyllenhaal is the latest actor to drop a drastic amount of weight for his upcoming film Nightcrawler, but he says it's just like preparing for any movie role.
The 32-year-old actor looked noticeably thinner as he appeared at the Hollywood Film Awards on Monday, where he received an award for his role in Prisoners, reports ST Communities.
"I think [I've lost] probably a little over 20 pounds, something like that," Gyllenhaal said to People magazine.
"It's not different than getting into character for anything. It's more about believing where you are and being present where you are," Gyllenhaal added. "Who's to say what the process is? I have a strange one... but I love what I do."
In Nightcrawler, Gyllenhaal will play Lou, a young man who stumbles upon the dangerous underworld of Los Angeles' freelance crime journalism.
According to The Daily Mail, Gyllenhaal says he lost the weight because he wanted his character to be 'literally and figuratively hungry'.
Of course, Gyllenhaal isn't the first actor to go gaunt for a role. Christian Bale is also fairly noted for his willingness to drop tremendous amounts of weight for a role, most notably in The Machinist and The Fighter.
More recently, Matthew McConaughey has also made headlines for his gaunt look in Dallas Buyers Club, where he played a cowboy who is facing death from Aids.
