Want a buff body like Zheng Geping's? It takes a lot of hard work

Zheng Geping turns 50 at the end of the month but has a body that would be the envy of someone half his age.

But the local TV actor says anyone can have the same fabulous body as they age - provided they have the desire and discipline to make it happen.

Happy to share his experience, the 49-year-old released a book in English on getting fit and looking great, Star Fitness, last year.

"I am not a professional athlete, I am just a normal person. If I can do it, so can you," he said.

But it entails a lot of hard work in the gym in addition to doing cardiovascular exercises. One also has to be fanatical about one's diet, he added.

Three times a year, he goes on a strict "clean diet" for one or two months at a time. He avoids processed or preserved foods, additives or added sugar. Think boiled beef, steamed vegetables and no salt or seasoning.

"My wife says she cannot eat like this. She would get depressed," he said.

It was not easy for Zheng to stick to such a diet at the start but it helped that he is not very particular about food.

The mind is an important part of the formula to attaining a healthy body, which, according to him, is "30 per cent gym, 40 per cent food and 30 per cent mind".

"There will be periods when you don't see results after working out. Or, when you push yourself too much, your mind will say, 'why don't you give up?' But these are just negative voices in your head. You have to stop listening to them," he said.

He and his actress wife Hong Hui Fang, 53, have two children aged 17 and 14. He  stands 1.82m-tall and weighs  84.4kg.
