He may be a world famous movie star, but Richard Gere was mistaken for a homeless man while shooting his new movie on the streets of New York.

According to an article in, 64-year-old Gere is currently filming for Time Out of Mind, a new drama which sees the Pretty Woman star play down-on-his-luck George who has lost his home and is trying to reconnect with his daughter.

The star has been spotted shooting in various locations around Manhattan this month, looking dishevelled in scruffy clothes and sporting some stubble.

It was during one of his shoot days that the actor was approached by French tourist Karine Gombeau who saw the star rifling through bins for food as she left a pizzeria with her husband and teenage son.

Gombeau told the New York Post she was keen to help the man and handed him a bag containing leftovers from their meal.

Seemingly keeping in character Richard apparently thanked the generous woman and asked her "What's in the bag?"

"I tried to tell him in English but it came out half in French," Mrs Gombeau said. "I said, 'Je suis désolée (I am sorry), but the pizza is cold.'"

Gere reportedly replied: "Thank you so much. God bless you!"
