Source: AsiaOne, The New PaperPhoto: SPHPsy, born Park Jee Sang, arrived in the world on Dec 31, 1977, in the Gangnam District in Seoul, South Korea.His birthplace would inspire the song - and dance - that proves to be infectious the world over.In 1996, he goes to college in the US to study business administration at Boston University.He transfers to Berklee College of Music.But even then, he finds that classes start too early.Eventually, he drops out before graduating. Fuelled by his love of rock acts like Queen, he returns home to be a singer.Calling himself Psy, and nicknamed "Bizarre singer", he was discovered by a TV producer.His career takes off.In 2000, he releases his first album but it is later not allowed to be sold to juveniles because of its content.In 2001, Psy is arrested for smoking marijuana. In 2003, he is called up for compulsory military service.Fans have to wait three years for a new Psy album.He releases his fourth CD in 2006.Even better, he ties the knot with his girlfriend of almost four years, Yoo Hye Yeon.This July, Gangnam Style became a global hit.He cracks the US market in a big way, thanks to appearances on talk and awards shows such as The Ellen DeGeneres Show and the MTV Video Music Awards.In October, Psy meets UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon, who - given Psy's wide reach - expresses interest in working with him to tackle global issues.Gangnam Style bags the Best Video award at the MTV Europe Music Awards, trumping "proper" acts like Rihanna, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga.In November, Psy receives the Okgwan Order of Cultural Merit - one of South Korea's highest cultural honours - for "outstanding meritorious services to the arts".Another milestone is that Gangnam Style deposes Justin Bieber's Baby as the most-watched video on YouTube.
