Malaysian singer Datuk Sharifah Aini dies of rare condition at 61

PETALING JAYA- Veteran singer Datuk Sharifah Aini Syed Jaafar has died of lung infection early Saturday.

Sharifah, fondly known as Kak Pah, was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of a hospital here for lung infection on Tuesday.

According to a press statement, Sharifah Aini, who turned 61 on Wednesday was diagnosed with lung fibrosis, also known as interstitial lung disease two years ago.

According to Consulting Respiratory Physician Datuk Dr Zainudin Md Zain who was treating her, the condition is rare and causes hardening or scarring of the lungs.

Sharifah Aini first broke into the entertainment industry in 1969 after having won a talent show in Singapore the previous year.

She produced various hits over the years including Dekatlah Padaku, Bunga Tanjung and Mak Inang Melayu, a duet with the late Sudirman Haji Arshad and more.
