Following a string of rumours, denials and issues about their rocky relationship, Malysian actress Erra Fazira and media businessman Engku Emran Engku Zaibal Abdin have finally ended their marriage.
Engku Emran, 39, held back tears as he pronounced the talak satu divorce, which provides for reconciliation should they intend to give their marriage another shot, before Syariah High Court judge Mohammad Adib Husain at around 12.50pm yesterday.
Erra, whose real name is Fazira Wan Chik, 40, was calm throughout the proceedings, reported mStar, the Malay news portal of The Star. She came to court wearing a face mask.
She was accompanied by fellow actresses Erma Fatima and Datin Umie Aida, as well as Umie’s husband Datuk Paduka Khairuddin Abu Hassan. Engku Emran arrived separately about an hour before the court proceedings.
They tied the knot on Oct 25, 2007, and have a daughter – five-year-old Engku Aleesya. Erra was previously married to singer-actor-producer Yusry Abdul Halim, of KRU fame, in 2003. They divorced three years later.
In court, Erra said her marriage to Engku Emran had reached a stage of irreconcilable differences and they had not lived under the same roof for a year.
Engku Emran, as the defendant, was given custody of their daughter, with Erra given visitation rights and allowed to take the child with her during school and festive holidays.
Met by the media after the divorce was sealed, Erra said this should put an end to speculation about her relationship with Engku Emran.
“The divorce proceeded in an amicable manner. Alhamdulillah (Praise to Allah), everything has been resolved,” she said. Engku Emran declined to comment on the divorce.
