Hawick Lau's proposal to Yang Mi wasn't romantic at all -- but it still touched her

Even though they are China’s top artists, Yang Mi and Hawick Lau remain down-to-earth and find joy easily in the simple things in life.

While many suspect that it would take flowers and candlelit dinners to win Yang Mi over, it turns out Hawick accomplished his mission with a simple, unromantic proposal that proved very effective ultimately, reported Jaynestars.

The power couple met in 2011 and their romance quickly progressed. Hawick’s father, actor Lau Dan (劉丹), had openly praised Yang Mi, and thinks of her as an ideal daughter-in-law.

Hawick also gifted Yang Mi with houses in Hong Kong to prove his sincerity to her.

On Nov 13, 2013, Hawick and Yang Mi announced that they have registered for marriage, and later revealed plans to hold their wedding at island paradise Bali on January 8.

Prior to their big day, Yang Mi made a stop in Hong Kong for work, where she shared the details of Hawick’s marriage proposal.

Although Hawick took the time to order a custom-designed, five-karat diamond ring from South Africa, Yang Mi revealed that he did nothing special otherwise, saying that it was not romantic at all.

While Yang Mi went to visit him on set one day, Hawick quietly slipped the ring onto her finger and said simply, “Once you’ve put it on, you can’t ever take it off!”

As disappointing as it may seem, Yang Mi was actually rather touched by his gesture and was pleasantly surprised.

“This type of marriage proposal fits our normal lifestyle. We like to keep everything simple and are not into fancy things," she said.

Even so, the couple is determined to make their big day memorable.

Leaving for Bali on Jan 7, the couple hired a decoy car to distract reporters and spoke little when surrounded at the Hong Kong International Airport.

There, the couple were caught up in yet another round of gossip-mongering after she appeared to have a 'small belly' behind the loose sweater she had on, reported Mingpao.

That further fuelled rumours that she was four months pregnant, which led reporters to ask Hawick's dad if she was pregnant.

He responded by laughing loudly and telling them to ask the couple that question themselves, before handing out red envelopes to everyone.

Hawick and Yang Mi’s ceremony is scheduled to be held at the five-star Bulgari Resort in the Indonesian island, a venue that includes a floating platform over a beautiful private pond.

Aside from her massive wedding ring, Yang Mi will also walk down the aisle with jewelry worth over HK$10 million (S$1.64m).
