Durian-loving pianist Krystian Zimerman returns to Singapore

Source: The Straits TimesHe last performed in Singapore in 1995 but Polish pianist Krystian Zimerman has never forgotten the taste of durian. In fact, he imports the spiky fruit to enjoy at his home in Basel, Switzerland."Durian is my favourite fruit," the 56-year-old says, ahead of his Jan 5 debut with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, at the Esplanade Concert Hall.Zimerman is known for his award-winning recordings of classical composers Debussy and Liszt for music label Deutsche Grammophon and for collaborations with prestigious conductors such as Herbert von Karajan and Sir Simon Rattle of the Berlin Philharmonic.Next week's concert, conducted by Lan Shui, showcases a modern melody, the Concerto For Piano & Orchestra written for the pianist 25 years ago by the late Polish composer Witold Lutoslawski.
