Chinese Internet star Guo Meimei was arrested by Beijing police on Thursday (Jul 10) for illegal World Cup gambling, said Chinese news reports.

The 23-year-old was arrested along with eight other syndicates.

According to online reports on China Daily and South China Morning Post, the group registered an overseas gambling website where people can place bets via telephone calls or mobile messaging applications.

Guo has reportedly confessed to her gambling, said a report on China Daily.

She became an Internet sensation three years ago after she posted photos of herself in glamorous gowns and in cut-out bikinis.

Guo also claimed to be the general manager of Red Cross Society of China on her micro-blog.

Her wealth was widely debated by netizens questioning how she could afford such luxury goods when she is working for a charitable organisation.

An investigation concluded that Guo had no relations with the organisation, reported South China Morning Post.
