Anthony Chen upset to see pirated versions of Ilo Ilo sold for $3 in Malaysia

It is reported that Singapore filmmaker Anthony Chen was saddened that the pirated version of his award winning film Ilo Ilo was widely available across shopping malls in Malaysia.

According to an article on Guang Ming Daily via AsiaOne, Chen said during an interview that the pirated version had a different cover picture and was priced at only RM8 (S$3).

Chen spotted it when shopping after giving a talk at a university in Malaysia.

A 2013 film, Ilo ilo is Chen's debut feature about the relationship about a 10-year-old boy in Singapore and his maid from the Philippines.

It is set in Singapore during the 1997 financial crisis, and features an international cast including Chen Tianwen and Yeo Yann Yann.

Since its release, Ilo Ilo has garnered mostly positive reviews, going on to receive numerous prestigious nominations and awards.
