Andrea Fonseka eager to return to entertainment scene

Barely six months after moving Down Under, former Miss Universe Malaysia and actress-host Andrea Fonseka already wants to get back to the regional entertainment scene.She left her post as national director of the Miss Universe Malaysia Organisation ‘“ which she held for three years ‘“ late last year to join her husband, Australian lawyer Paul Dewar, 42, in Perth.Since they got hitched in 2009, the marriage had been more or a less a long-distance one.But Fonseka, who turns 29 in August, now wants to do as many things as she can in the showbiz industry before she hits the big 3-0.In town last Thursday as the face of the La Putri Outstanding Jewellery Design Competition 2013, she told The New Paper: “It feels really good to be back in Singapore and working again. I do miss working here quite a bit.“I am turning 30 next year, and I want to make full use of this time to do many things, be it hosting or acting. I would love to host a travelogue as I haven’t done that before.‘The competition, in its inaugural year, is to discover and nurture jewellery design talents. Contestants have to use rubies to design a set or piece of jewellery for Fonseka, who is also one of the judges.Participants can download the official competition entry form from and the closing date for, submission is Aug 16.Fonseka, who got her break as one of the briefcase beauties on the 2007 Channel 5 game show Deal Or No Deal, feels fortunate.“When I was building my career, I felt the need to be more visible and more famous. I wanted to take on any job that came my way,‘ she said.“Now that I have more freedom and financial security, I have the advantage to really pick and choose the projects I want to work on.‘In the past few months, Fonseka took on the role of the understanding housewife and did the laundry, cleaned the house and cooked.She said with a laugh: “I put dinner on his table, and he is not a fussy eater, so he makes do with it.‘Even though they now live together, she reveals that they still haven’t been spending much time together.He has been travelling extensively for work and was in the US for a business trip.And she will return to Perth only in the middle of this month, after her work commitments here and in Malaysia.She said: “We are spending one month apart in the span of two months, but it is not a bad thing. Sometimes, seeing each other less makes the passion between us grow.“I still put in an effort to dress up, put on my jewellery and my nicest dress and go out on a date with him once a week.‘Fonseka is also not in a hurry to start a family yet, even, though the thought has crossed her mind.“I want to be an amazing mother. Who knows? Maybe I can be a full-time mother changing diapers at home in Malaysia, Singapore or Australia,‘ she said.“But I’ll leave it up to God to see whether I can be blessed with a child.‘
