Ah Nan had heart attack moments after he sang his last song at Parklane club

Source: The Straits TimesVeteran getai artiste and compere John Cheng, better known to his fans as Ah Nan, suffered his fatal heart attack moments after he had sung his last song early Tuesday morning at 1.50am.He had gone backstage to rest after the number, and had complained of being unable to breathe properly.20 minutes later, an ambulance arrived to take him to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, and Ah Nan passed out not long after. He died less than two hours later.Ah Nan had been working a punishing schedule at Parklane Shopping Mall's Club Cleopatra, performing about five shows a week. All those late nights spent performing had been for the sake of his three daughters, whom he had been determined to send to university.Ah Nan had also worked closely with Stomp in the past for its annual Getai coverage on Getai A-Go-Go, while continuing to host shows including this recent one at Arumugam Road.Before becoming a performer, Ah Nan was reputed to be a gang member and loan shark runner. In 2006, he had spent six months at a drug rehabilitation centre.He had been having cold sweats and chest pains for some time before the heart attack, and had been on high blood pressure and cholesterol medication.
