Legendary Filipino folk singer Freddie Aguilar's date at the 5th Star Awards for Music held last Sunday, October 13 piqued the curiosity of many.
Aguilar, famous for his hit song Anak, received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the event held at Solaire Resort and Casino in Pasay City.
Entertainment website PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) approached Freddie backstage after he received the award to ask about his date.
"I'm here with my girlfriend," Freddie confirmed in the local language. "She is also here with my son Jeriko's pregnant girlfriend."
The 60-year-old singer readily volunteered his current girlfriend's age.
"My girlfriend is..she's only 16," he said.
He relates: "I didn't know she was 16 when I courted her. When I found out, I said, "Well, that's that. What can I do?" Can I still back off when I've already fallen in love?"
The singer didn't mention the name of his 16-year-old girlfriend.
When asked about what her parents said, he replied: "Her parents have probably accepted it. They just told her, 'Be careful with that one, he's said to be a playboy!'"
"I will be careful, because if anyone complains, some people might have a field day."
"But I have the parents' consent," he said.
There is a 44-year age gap between Freddie and his girlfriend.
The singer related to PEP: "Actually, what's good about her is that she's trying hard to fit in with me. Meanwhile, I also try to meet her at her level. For instance, if she wants to go to Jollibee, I'll go with her. On the other hand, if I want to go for fine dining, she will go with me."
"If she wants to watch a movie, even if I don't want to watch a movie, I'll go with her - but as part of a group."
Asked whether he worries about being accused as a 'cradle snatcher', the music legend says: "I've already been accused of that. Remember my third wife? She was only 17 when she became my girlfriend."
"I couldn't prevent anyone from writing about it, but I said, I haven't read anything in the dictionary about love meaning you have to look for someone who's the same age as you are. There's nothing like that written there."
"There's also nothing that says love means you should have the same religion, or the same status in life, or that you're from the same country..there's nothing like that."
When asked by PEP whether they can write about the sensitive matter, Aguilar said that it was ok, although he did figure that he will get a lot of criticisms because of it.
"But I fell in love, what can I do?"
Asked whether much younger women are really his type, he explained: "No..they tend to like me also."
He said he's also wondering why his female admirers are usually either older than him, or much younger, with nothing in the middle.
Is he ready to marry his new girlfriend now?
He exclaims, "Of course, of course! But as of now, we can't get married yet."
In the Philippines, those between 18 to 21 years of age need parental consent before they can get married.\
"We haven't planned anything yet on the marriage front, but we are talking about having a baby, that's what we've been talking about."
He claims that he told her that she's still too young to have a baby, but she says that she wants to.
The singer then told her that he wants a son, so he can stop trying for another baby.
The singer already has six children.
He says, however, that he will leave the number of children up to her.
